Unraveling the Past Mythology and Historical Memory in Indian English

Abstract

This is what contemporary Indian English literature does: it questions the past to find meaning in a disjointed present. Authors such as Namita Gokhale and Amitav Ghosh show that history and mythology are not just lifeless archives or inert writings. Rather they are living creatures who consciously create personal identities and define society's norms. In reclaiming the myths of the past, these writers are questioning the boundaries and limitations of nation-states, and revealing the unrecorded traumas of official histories, they demonstrate that to remember is to survive, to resist.
